Tweed Heads and Coolangatta SLSC is a non-profit volunteer organisation, run by its members for its members and the local community. The Board of Management (BOM) is voted in at the club Annual General Meeting. The BOM serve for that current season on the “Board”. The Club has other office bearers & sub committees that report through to the Board positions. The Board meets at least monthly and the minutes are available to members.
Vaughn Thomas
President
Vaughn’s children originally joined the club in 2005 with his wife Tara, Vaughn helped his daughter Ivy’s age group, then joined in 2009 to become Hughies Age Manager. He then completed his Bronze in 2010 and became Nipper President for 8 years as well as continuing roles as Team Manager & Age Manager. Vaughn is the proud recipient of two McPherson awards and a Queensland Andy Frizzell OAM OBE’ Award for Services to Junior Activities.
After 3 years in the deputy president role Vaughn stepped into the president’s role in 2023. Building on a club that is in a strong position is always difficult but similar dedication to how he doubled the nippers numbers in the club will ensure the club continues to thrive. As a builder, Vaughn is determined to quickly finish the club renovations and gain the additional revenue.
Vaughn has undertaken a lot of work for the Club in securing sponsors, grants and fund raising. He still Age Manages the Under 6 Nippers, is an Official and has competed for the Club in Masters events on the beach. Vaughn holds his silver medallion and has patrolled around 100 hours most seasons for last 12 seasons
Rodney Jones
Deputy President
Rod has held several roles with TH&C since he moved here from Sydney including President, Director of Surf Sports, Nipper president and Club Captain. He has an extensive knowledge of Surf Life Saving due to his active involvement competing, coaching, as an Official, trainer and assessor, and Patrol Captain. Rod is a life member of TH&C and also of Point Danger Branch. TH&C has benefitted from the substantial contribution to our club from Rod over the past 20 years.
Lisa Baxter
Secretary
Joining the club in 2017 with Twins Kaya and Finn Lisa quickly became Age manager and bronze medallion holder. A motivated and well organised individuals who gets done what she says she is going to get done.
The Baxter’s are a family of Athletes in and outside of Surf Lifesaving with Lisa having completed many Ironman and Olympic triathlons races. Most family holidays involve long hikes and mountain biking.
This is Lisa’s first venture into club management committees and she is excited about getting involved.
James Sullivan
Treasurer
James grew up at TH&C. He was a boatie and loved the dorms even though he lived just out of town. James runs a successful Accounting business in Coolangatta and has been looking after the finances of the Surf Club for the last 6 years and prior to that the accounts of the Nipper section. His wife and children are all active and participating Club members.
Dean Iwanuscha
Director of Surf Lifesaving
Dean Iwanuscha originally joined TH&C SLSC in the 2006 season.
Dean has held a number of roles within the club, including Patrol Co-ordinator and Club Captain on a number of occasions.
Dean hold a host of awards including Bronze Medallion, Advanced Resuscitation, First Aid Certificate, IRB Driver & Crew and been awarded 15 year Patrol service award.
Dean is a true club person always first to step forward to ensure our kids get the opportunity to compete at Carnivals he will either take on a role of Official or IRB driver.
Dean has won most club patrol hours on numerous occasions with an incredible 366 hours in the 2022 Patrol season and 3233 hours since he started patrols in 2006.
TH&C SLSC is certainly part of Deans family.
Steve Mavor
Director of Surf Sports
Stephen, has been a lifelong member of TH&C, having grown up in Tweed Heads, it was always Greenmount Beach. He spent time as a TH&C nipper and joined as an active patrolling cadet member in 1987, gaining his Bronze in 1989. He has been an active member since that time. Fulfilling patrol captain duties and serving previously on the committee as IRB captain & Boat Captain.
Over the years Stephen has competed in all facets of Surf Lifesaving competition, from IRB, Beach, Board & Ski, but Surf Boats was always Stephen’s passion, and he competed successfully through U18 / U21, opens and masters. He currently serves as Boat captain and also as one of the club sweeps.
Glenn Turner
Building
Glenn has accepted the role of Building and Amenities for the 2021 season. Glenn joined TH&C Nippers in 2014 with his family. He became the Nipper Vice President in 2015, a role he continues to the current season. Glenn achieved his Bronze Medallion in 2015, IRB crew certificate in 2016, IRB driver certificate, Tractor certificate, ART certificate and Silver medallion in 2017.
During his first patrolling year, Glenn achieved the Trainee of the year award. He completed his Beach management course in 2019, which allowed him to become a Patrol captain, a role he continues with his current patrol group.
Iain Rogers
Nipper President
Iain has been a member of Tweed Heads & Coolangatta SLSC since 2012, joining the club with his 3 children in Nippers. Iain has been an age group manager from the first year, Iain has his Bronze Medallion and helps with Patrol and water safety. He occasionally competes at masters and originally joined the Surf Life Saving movement in 1990. Iain enjoys the comradery the Surf Life Saving association and TH&C SLSC brings to his family.
Iain saw an opportunity to step into the Junior Activities Co-ordinators role which also serves as the Nipper President on the TH&C SLSC Board of Management.
